EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "OKLAHOMA: WHEAT, 1937" captures the essence of rural America during the early years of the Great Depression. Taken by renowned photographer Dorothea Lange in 1937, this image showcases a vast wheat field stretching as far as the eye can see in Oklahoma. The simplicity of this scene is striking - a testament to the resilience and hard work of American farmers during challenging times. The golden wheat stalks sway gently in the autumn breeze against a backdrop of an expansive prairie landscape. Above, fluffy clouds dot the sky, adding depth and contrast to this timeless composition. Lange's masterful use of light and shadow brings out every detail in this photograph. Each blade of wheat stands out with remarkable clarity against its surroundings, highlighting both their beauty and importance for sustenance. As part of Lange's documentation for Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program, which aimed to alleviate poverty through various initiatives including agricultural reforms, this image serves as a powerful visual representation of hope amidst adversity. Displayed here as a print by The Granger Collection from their Carousel Collection series, it offers viewers an opportunity to reflect on America's rich history while appreciating nature's bounty and human perseverance captured within one frame.
