EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken by Marjory Collins in January 1943, we are transported back in time to the bustling streets of New York City's Mott Street. The image captures a tender moment between a young girl and her doll, as they stand on the sidewalk against the backdrop of an urban landscape. The child, dressed warmly for the winter weather, holds her doll close to her chest with a sense of protectiveness and affection. Her hat adds a touch of innocence to her youthful face as she gazes into the distance, perhaps lost in thought or captivated by something beyond our view. Mott Street itself is alive with activity - people going about their daily lives, cars passing by, and storefronts lining both sides of the street. This slice of Chinatown offers glimpses into its rich cultural heritage through signs written in Chinese characters and architectural details that speak to its history. Marjory Collins' skillful composition allows us to feel like silent observers on this mid-century New York City street corner. We can almost hear the sounds of footsteps echoing off pavement and distant conversations carried by the wind. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that amidst the chaos and constant motion of city life, there are moments where simple joys take center stage – like a child cherishing their beloved doll on Mott Street.
