EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print, titled "Trumpeting Angel, 1498" transports us back to the enchanting world of medieval France. Created in Paris during the late 15th century, this exquisite illustration is a part of the renowned book of hours called Heures a l Usage de Rome. The focal point of this artwork is an angelic figure gracefully playing a trumpet. With its wings spread wide and horn raised high, the trumpeter exudes power and majesty. The intricate details carved into the woodcut bring life to every feather on its wings and every strand of hair flowing in the wind. As we gaze upon this mythical creature, we are reminded of the rich symbolism associated with angels throughout history. Angels have long been regarded as messengers from heaven, bridging the gap between mortals and divinity. In this particular depiction, their trumpet represents not only music but also heralds important announcements or proclamations. The artist's skillful use of woodcut technique adds depth and texture to each line etched onto paper. This traditional method involves carving an image onto a wooden block before applying ink and pressing it onto paper—a meticulous process that requires precision and patience. "Trumpeting Angel, 1498" serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a historical artifact that allows us to glimpse into medieval French culture. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate viewers today by reminding us of our fascination with heavenly beings who traverse between realms while creating harmonious melodies for all to hear.
