EDITORS COMMENTS
This World War I poster by Fritz Boehle, created in 1915, is a powerful representation of the intersection between faith and patriotism during a tumultuous time. The image features an armored knight on horseback, evoking medieval imagery while symbolizing the strength and valor of soldiers on the battlefield. The knight's helmet is adorned with a halo, suggesting divine protection and blessing bestowed upon those who fight for their country. Surrounding the figure are text elements that convey both religious devotion and a call to action. The phrase "Thanks be to God" expresses gratitude for divine guidance amidst the chaos of war. The poster also appeals to individuals' sense of duty by urging them to contribute even small amounts ("a mite") towards the war effort. It emphasizes that no contribution is too insignificant when it comes to supporting one's nation. Boehle's artwork serves as propaganda aimed at inspiring unity among German citizens and encouraging them to actively participate in World War I. By combining Christian symbolism with patriotic fervor, this poster seeks to instill a sense of righteousness in its viewers. Overall, this print captures not only historical context but also highlights how religion was utilized as a tool for motivation during times of conflict.
