EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense duel between Captain John Tollemache and Captain John Pennington at the New York Arms in 1777. The duel was sparked by a sonnet that Pennington had written about Tollemache's wife, igniting a fire of jealousy within him. As depicted in this late 19th-century engraving by Howard Pyle, both men stand resolute, their swords drawn and pointed towards each other. The scene takes place within an interior setting adorned with a grand fireplace, adding to the dramatic ambiance surrounding this deadly confrontation. Tollemache is seen wearing a peruke wig, symbolizing his status as a British captain during this time period in America's history. Tragically, this fateful encounter resulted in Tollemache losing his life. The image evokes strong emotions as we witness these two men locked in mortal combat over matters of honor and love. Granger Art on Demand presents us with yet another remarkable historical artifact through this photo print. It serves as a reminder of the complexities of human relationships and how they can lead to tragic consequences even amongst esteemed individuals such as captains serving their respective nations.
