EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print, titled "Visit to the Plague Patient" takes us back to the year 1500 in Venice, Italy. The image portrays a scene of desperation and hope amidst the devastating plague that ravaged Europe during this time. In the center of the composition stands a physician, holding a sponge soaked with vinegar and spices to his nose. This act was believed to protect him from inhaling miasma, which was thought to be responsible for spreading the disease. Two attendants flank him, fumigating with torches in an attempt to purify the air around them. The patient lies on a bed, weakened by illness and surrounded by symbols of medieval medicine such as herbs and potions. The atmosphere is tense yet determined as these individuals confront one of history's deadliest epidemics together. Attributed to Gentile Bellini from Johannes de Ketham's Fasciculus Medicinae, this woodcut captures both the fear and resilience that characterized this era. It serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring struggle against infectious diseases throughout history. As we gaze upon this print today, it prompts us to reflect on our own battles against modern-day pandemics while appreciating how far medical science has advanced since those dark times.
