EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the late 19th century, capturing the majestic presence of the Mississippi Steamboat. Known as "The Bluff City" this sternwheel steamboat was a proud vessel belonging to the Anchor Line. The photograph showcases its impressive exterior, made entirely of wood, which adds a touch of rustic charm to its grandeur. Moored along the picturesque Mississippi River, this steamboat stands as a testament to America's rich maritime history. Men can be seen on board, perhaps crew members or passengers eagerly awaiting their journey ahead. A gangplank extends from the boat towards the riverside, inviting us to step aboard and explore its wonders. The paddle steamer's significance in transportation during that era cannot be overstated. It served not only as a means of travel but also played an essential role in logging and other industries along the riverbanks. This image captures a moment frozen in time - between its launching in 1896 and tragic destruction by fire at Chester, Illinois in 1897. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history captured by The Granger Collection's Carousel Collection, we are transported back to turn-of-the-century America. Its nostalgic allure reminds us of simpler times when wooden vessels like these gracefully navigated through our nation's waterways with elegance and purpose.
