EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print of "GRIMM: HANSEL AND GRETEL" we are transported into the enchanting world of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Illustrated by Wanda Gag in 1936, the drawing depicts a pivotal moment as Hansel drops pebbles to mark his path while being led into the ominous woods by his mother and father. The scene is filled with anticipation and trepidation, perfectly captured through Gag's meticulous attention to detail. The forest looms large behind them, its dark shadows hinting at unknown dangers that lie ahead. Hansel clutches an axe tightly in his hand, symbolizing both protection and vulnerability as he takes on the role of protector for himself and his sister Gretel. The expressions on their faces reveal a mix of determination, fear, and trust in their parents' guidance. The peasant-like attire worn by Hansel's father and mother adds authenticity to the setting, transporting us back to a simpler time when survival was paramount. This illustration beautifully captures one of the most iconic moments from this timeless fairy tale - a moment where innocence meets adversity head-on. As we gaze upon this print, we can't help but be drawn into their journey through these perilous woods; our hearts racing alongside theirs as they navigate towards an uncertain fate.
