EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful World War I cartoon created by Boardman Robinson in December 1914. The image is filled with symbolism and allegory, depicting the grim reality of war during that time. In the center of the cartoon stands a skeleton figure, personifying death itself. Holding a scythe, it represents the countless lives lost on both sides of the conflict. Surrounding this skeletal figure are soldiers, their bodies lying motionless on the ground as casualties of war. The artist's use of crayon creates an eerie atmosphere, emphasizing the somber mood and early stages of World War I. This particular scene takes place in Flanders, Belgium - one of many battlegrounds during this devastating conflict. Robinson's cartoon serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost and political implications associated with war. It highlights not only individual loss but also symbolizes nations grappling with destruction and devastation. This print offers viewers a glimpse into history through artistry, allowing us to reflect upon past events while contemplating their relevance today. It serves as a stark reminder that even amidst chaos and violence, there is always room for artistic expression to shed light on important issues such as war and its consequences.
