EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland during one of her favorite pastimes - hawking. The woodcut, taken from George Turbervilles Booke of Faulconrie in 1575, showcases the queen's love for falconry and her prowess as an equestrian. In this image, Queen Elizabeth is depicted elegantly riding a horse while holding a majestic falcon on her gloved hand. Her regal presence is undeniable as she confidently commands both the horse and the bird with grace and poise. The intricate details of the woodcut bring to life the vibrant atmosphere of Elizabethan England, with its rich renaissance culture. As one of history's most iconic female rulers, Queen Elizabeth I shattered gender norms by actively participating in traditionally male-dominated activities such as hunting and falconry. This portrayal not only celebrates her passion for these pursuits but also highlights her strength and determination to rule with authority. The composition beautifully captures the essence of this remarkable queen - a powerful leader who embraced both femininity and strength. It serves as a reminder that even in a time when women were expected to be submissive, Queen Elizabeth defied expectations and left an indelible mark on history. This print is not just a stunning piece of art; it represents an era defined by royal splendor, cultural richness, and female empowerment under the reign of one extraordinary woman.
