EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Benjamin Franklin, a true Renaissance man of his time. Born in 1706 and passing away in 1790, Franklin left an indelible mark on American history as a printer, publisher, scientist, inventor, statesman, and diplomat. This mezzotint engraving by Henry S. Sadd from around 1846 beautifully captures Franklin's essence. Seated in an elegant interior setting with a window overlooking the world beyond, Franklin exudes wisdom and intellect. His piercing gaze reflects his deep understanding of various subjects such as electricity and compass navigation – symbols of his scientific pursuits. Holding a book in one hand while resting the other on a globe nearby signifies his vast knowledge and curiosity about the world. The artist Tompkins Harrison Matteson masterfully painted this portrait that served as inspiration for Sadd's engraving. The lighting highlights every detail of Franklin's face – lines etched by experience and determination. As one of America's founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin played an instrumental role in shaping the nation we know today. This print serves as a timeless reminder of his contributions to society and reminds us to embrace our own intellectual curiosity while striving for greatness.
