EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "The Crucifixion of Jesus" takes us back to the year 1880 when it was published. The print is a reproduction of a remarkable drawing created in 1860 by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, a renowned German painter from the 19th century. In this powerful depiction, we witness the solemn moment described in John 19:16-30 when Jesus Christ was crucified at Golgotha. The artist's attention to detail and skillful use of color bring this significant event to life. Every brushstroke seems infused with emotion, capturing the anguish and sacrifice that took place on that fateful day. As we gaze upon this artwork, our eyes are drawn to Jesus hanging on the cross at the center of the composition. His body bears wounds inflicted during his crucifixion, reminding us of his immense suffering for humanity's salvation. Surrounding him are figures representing various individuals present during this pivotal moment – Mary Magdalene stands nearby, her grief evident as she witnesses her beloved friend's torment. This chromolithograph serves as a timeless reminder of an event central to Christian faith and history. It allows us to reflect on Jesus' ultimate act of love and redemption while appreciating Schnorr von Carolsfeld's artistic talent and dedication in preserving such an important biblical scene.
