EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic British naval vessel, The Royal George, as it peacefully lies off Deptford in 1757. Painted by the talented artist John Cleveley the Elder, this artwork showcases a significant piece of maritime history. The Royal George met a tragic fate when it sank at Spithead in 1782, resulting in the devastating loss of approximately 800 lives. In this portrait-format image, we see The Royal George proudly displaying its flag while anchored on calm waters. Its grandeur and intricate details are brought to life through vibrant colors that enhance every aspect of this galleon-style sailing ship. This photograph beautifully depicts both the power and elegance associated with such vessels during Europe's golden age of water transport. Henry Guttmann skillfully captured this historical masterpiece without compromising any detail or emotion conveyed by Cleveley's original painting. Through his lens, Guttmann allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship involved in constructing such ships but also their significance within naval warfare and exploration during the late 18th century. As you gaze upon this remarkable print, take a moment to reflect on the lives lost aboard The Royal George and pay homage to those who served bravely on these magnificent vessels. Let it serve as a reminder of our rich maritime heritage and an appreciation for art that immortalizes important chapters from our past.
