Getting close
Close up view of a whale shark feeding at Cenderawasih Bay. There is a resident population of maybe 30 individuals who live in the Cenderawasih Bay area of West Papua and try to feed off what the fishermen catch over night in their nets. These whales suck on the nets and ingest small fish and other nutrients. The whales themselves are often caught in the nets over night and are usually released the following morning

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a breathtaking close-up view of a majestic whale shark gracefully feeding in the crystal-clear waters of Cenderawasih Bay. In this unique ecosystem, approximately 30 resident whale sharks have formed a symbiotic relationship with local fishermen who cast their nets overnight. As dawn breaks, these gentle giants approach the nets and delicately suck on them, ingesting small fish and other nutrients that have been caught within. While this behavior may seem perilous for both the whales and the fishermen's catch, it is heartening to know that these magnificent creatures are usually released unharmed each morning. The resilience and adaptability of these whale sharks exemplify nature's ability to find harmony even in seemingly unlikely circumstances. The sheer size and grace of the whale shark depicted in this photograph leave viewers awe-inspired by its presence. Its immense mouth wide open as it feeds serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between predator and prey in our natural world. Wildestanimal has masterfully captured not only an extraordinary moment but also shed light on an intriguing ecological phenomenon occurring off the coast of West Papua. This stunning print invites us to marvel at nature's wonders while urging us to protect fragile ecosystems like Cenderawasih Bay for future generations to cherish.
