EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving, published in 1882, depicts the legendary St. George engaged in a fierce battle with a menacing dragon. The print is based on an original drawing by Ludwig GlAotzle and was engraved after a painting by Gustav Spangenberg, both renowned German painters of their time. In this vertical composition, we witness the intense struggle between good and evil as St. George fearlessly confronts the monstrous creature. Riding atop his majestic horse, he brandishes his sword with determination and courage while locking eyes with the ferocious dragon. The intricate details of the engraving bring to life every sinewy muscle and scale on both adversaries. The historical significance of this scene cannot be overstated; it represents one of Christianity's most iconic tales from ancient times. St. George's martyrdom is symbolized through his valiant efforts to rid humanity of evil forces, even at great personal risk. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are reminded not only of our fascination with mythical creatures but also of humanity's enduring struggle against adversity throughout history.
