Two women and a child terrified by rats

Two women and a child in the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, being scared by some of the rats which were plaguing the townsfolk in 1284. The event inspired the legend of the Pied Piper who removed the rats by playing his musical instrument but when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he lured away most of their children. From " The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, during a time of great terror. In 1284, two women and a child are frozen in fear as they find themselves surrounded by rats. The townsfolk were plagued by these vermin, causing chaos and despair among the community. Little did they know that this chilling event would inspire one of the most enduring legends of all time - the tale of the Pied Piper. As depicted in Robert Browning's famous poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" this mysterious figure came to their rescue with his enchanting music. With each note he played on his musical instrument, rats began to follow him until every last one was led away from the town. However, greed overcame gratitude when it came time for payment. The townspeople refused to compensate the piper for his heroic act, leading him to seek revenge by luring away their children through an enchanted melody. Captured beautifully in this vintage illustration by Kate Greenaway from 1888, we witness both horror and fascination on the faces of these three individuals. Their wide eyes reflect not only their terror but also their curiosity about what lies ahead. Through this evocative image, we are reminded of how folklore can be born out of real-life events and how timeless stories continue to captivate our imaginations centuries later.
