The forces of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who sought to control the Italian city states of Lombardia, are shown facing their ultimate defeat. The painting exudes energy and aggression as a large group of males engage in fierce combat on a sprawling battlefield. Amidst the chaos, horses gallop with determination while soldiers ride fearlessly into battle. The landscape serves as a backdrop for this monumental clash between power and resistance. Amidst all the violence and death depicted, there is an underlying message of triumph over oppression.
