EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the timeless beauty of Hawthornden Castle, nestled on the banks of the River North Esk in Midlothian, Scotland. Once owned by the Abernethy family and later passed down to the Douglases, this magnificent castle holds centuries of history within its walls. Dating back to the 15th century, Hawthornden Castle boasts a striking three-storey tower and a triangular courtyard enclosed by a south curtain wall. Its architectural grandeur is evident even in this 19th-century style photograph, showcasing its enduring charm. However, this castle's past was not without turmoil. The Earl of Hertford infamously sacked it twice during The Rough Wooing in 1544 and 1547. Despite these challenges, Hawthornden Castle stands strong as a testament to resilience and perseverance. As we gaze upon this image captured by duncan1890 from Fine Art Storehouse, we are transported back in time to an era where European culture flourished amidst breathtaking landscapes like that of Midlothian. This print serves as a reminder of our rich heritage and invites us to appreciate the architectural marvels that have withstood the test of time.
