EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless masterpiece "Apollo and Daphne" sculpted by the renowned Italian artist, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Created in 1622/23, this iconic sculpture depicts a pivotal moment from Greek mythology where Apollo, the god of music and poetry, pursues Daphne, a nymph who transforms into a laurel tree to escape his advances. The wood engraving beautifully captures the intricate details and emotional intensity of Bernini's original work. The delicate lines etched on wood bring forth the ethereal beauty of Daphne as she gracefully morphs into foliage while Apollo reaches out desperately towards her. This dramatic composition perfectly encapsulates Bernini's mastery in portraying movement and emotion through stone. Published in 1884, this print allows art enthusiasts to appreciate Bernini's genius even if they cannot visit Galleria Borghese in Rome where the original sculpture resides.
