Created in 1838 by an anonymous artist for Le Charivari magazine, this illustration offers a unique portrayal of Balzac's larger-than-life personality. In the image, we see Balzac standing confidently with folded arms and a mischievous smile on his face. Despite his fame and success as a writer, the artist humorously depicts him as being quite plump. The caption accompanying the artwork reads: "Balzac nourri de gloire est cependant bien gras, par malheur ses succès ne lui ressemblent pas" which translates to "Balzac fed with glory is nevertheless very fat; unfortunately his successes do not resemble him". The attention to detail in this lithograph is remarkable – from Balzac's long hair flowing down to his oriental slippers peeking out from beneath his monk-like habit. This playful representation captures both the essence of Balzac's character and the spirit of satire that was prevalent during that era.
