EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures a pivotal moment in American history - the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. The image showcases the dramatic scene with meticulous detail, transporting us back to that fateful day. In the foreground, we see Lord Charles Cornwallis, Lieutenant General of the British Army, standing tall and resolute as he presents his sword to General George Washington. The symbolism is profound; it signifies not only the surrender of an army but also the birth of a new nation. Surrounding them are onlookers and spectators who have gathered to witness this historic event. Their faces reflect a mix of emotions - curiosity, awe, and perhaps even relief after years of conflict. Amongst them stands President George Washington himself, exuding strength and determination as he accepts Cornwallis' surrender. The composition is further enhanced by the presence of horses adorned with flags fluttering proudly in the wind. These symbols remind us that this victory was hard-fought and represents a turning point in America's struggle for independence. This powerful print serves as a reminder of our nation's resilience and triumph over adversity. It immortalizes an important chapter in American history when freedom prevailed against all odds. As we gaze upon this artwork, we cannot help but feel inspired by those who fought for liberty and grateful for their sacrifice.
