EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "New Members of the House of Commons, Heroes of the Conflict" captures a significant moment in history. Taken by an English photographer in the 19th century, this print showcases a group of esteemed politicians who have recently joined the House of Commons. The composition is filled with distinguished individuals from various regions such as West Marylebone, Merthyr Tydfil, North East Lanarkshire, Prestwich, Kilmarnock Burghs, and more. The conservatives stand alongside liberals and unionists; their differences set aside for this collective portrait. Each member exudes confidence and determination as they pose together. Among them are notable figures like F. Cawley, D. A. Thomas, E. Lawrence, D. N. Nicol - all heroes who have played crucial roles during times of conflict. The image provides a glimpse into the political landscape at that time - Cornwall to Lancashire; Heywood to Argyllshire; Gainsborough to Connemara; Truro to Bolton - representing diverse constituencies united under one roof. Photography has frozen this historic moment forever – capturing not only their physical appearances but also their dedication towards serving their communities within the hallowed walls of Parliament. Displayed in private collections today but originally published in The Illustrated London News on August 17th, 1895 – this photograph serves as a testament to these remarkable individuals' commitment and contribution to society during turbulent times.
