EDITORS COMMENTS

Titled "St. Luke Writing, from a Book of Hours" this vellum manuscript depicts St. Luke, one of the four Gospel writers in Christianity. The image captures St. Luke seated at a lectern, engrossed in his writing task. The delicate illumination and intricate details bring to life the medieval artistry that was prevalent during this era. The use of vibrant colors and gold leaf highlights adds an ethereal quality to the composition. A bull, symbolizing St. Luke's evangelistic role as described in Christian tradition, accompanies him on this sacred endeavor. This religious iconography further enhances the spiritual significance conveyed through Bourdichon's work.
