The U. S. S. Pennsylvania Under Tow at the Outbreak of the American Civil War with Fort Monroe in the Background
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by James E. Buttersworth that captures a pivotal moment in American history. The artwork, measuring 25.4x30.5 cm, showcases the USS Pennsylvania being towed amidst billowing smoke and flames as it prepares to defend Virginia against an ominous threat. The composition skillfully juxtaposes elements of chaos and order, with the towering Fort Monroe serving as a symbol of protection and defense against impending danger. The American flag proudly flies atop both the ship and fortress, representing unity and resilience during this turbulent time. Buttersworth's attention to detail is evident in his depiction of natural phenomena such as clouds and coastline, which add depth to the scene. A medium group of rowboats can be seen alongside the ship, manned by determined soldiers rowing towards their duty. This artwork evokes a sense of urgency and contrasts contrasting emotions - from bravery to madness - felt by those involved in this historic conflict. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who fought for their beliefs during one of America's darkest chapters. "The U. S. S. Pennsylvania Under Tow at the Outbreak of the American Civil War with Fort Monroe in the Background" offers viewers a glimpse into an important moment in North American history while showcasing Buttersworth's artistic talent for capturing dramatic scenes on canvas.
