EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and detailed woodblock print, titled "Number 2: Hodogaya, Totsuka, Fujisawa and Hiratsuka Stations" captures the essence of Japan's famous Tokaido Road. Created by Utagawa Kuniyoshi in 1835, this artwork offers a glimpse into the bustling activity along this historic coastal route. The print showcases four stations along the Tokaido Road - Hodogaya, Totsuka, Fujisawa, and Hiratsuka. The yellow labels on the mountain range indicate significant landmarks such as Shinmachi Bridge at Hodogaya, Yoshida Bridge at Totsuka, and Fujisawa Bridge. These stops served as rest points for travelers to replenish their supplies or seek shelter during their journey between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. Intriguingly dark yet captivatingly beautiful night scene adds an air of mystery to the composition. Porters carrying goods and luggage can be seen traversing the path alongside travelers adorned in traditional hats. The Japanese landscape unfolds with its serene seascape stretching towards the horizon. This color woodblock print is housed at Victoria & Albert Museum in London where it continues to captivate art enthusiasts from around the world. Through Kuniyoshi's skillful craftsmanship and attention to detail, viewers are transported back in time to experience a snapshot of life along one of Japan's most renowned historical routes.
