EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from the 18th century depicts a remarkable encounter witnessed by Norwegian missionary Hans Egede during his expedition to Greenland. The image showcases Egede's representation of a sea snake, an awe-inspiring creature that left him in utter astonishment. The intricate details of this engraving bring to life the mythical qualities associated with this legendary serpent-like being. Its elongated body coils around a ship, evoking both fear and fascination among those on board. This depiction not only captures the imagination but also serves as a testament to Egede's bravery and curiosity as an explorer. As we delve into the realm of mythology, it becomes evident that this sea snake holds great significance in maritime folklore. It embodies the duality between danger and allure that has captivated sailors for centuries. The presence of such creatures in ancient tales adds an air of mystery and excitement to seafaring adventures. Through Giancarlo Costa's expertly crafted print, we are transported back in time to witness this extraordinary encounter firsthand. We can almost feel the tension aboard the vessel as crew members gaze upon this mythical beast with wide-eyed wonderment.
