EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic arrival of The Astrolabe and The Zelee at Noukahiva in the 19th century. Painted by a French School artist, this colour lithograph showcases the historic moment when these two renowned ships entered the port of Noukahiva in the Marquesa Islands, French Polynesia. The Astrolabe, originally known as Coquille, was a remarkable vessel that had been converted from a horse barge into an exploration ship by the French Navy. It gained fame for its expeditions under Jules Dumont d'Urville, particularly during his Antarctica expedition from 1837 to 1840. In this artwork, we witness the grandeur of these three-masted sailboats as they gracefully navigate through turquoise waters towards their destination. The enchanting scenery of Noukahiva serves as a stunning backdrop with lush greenery and towering mountains surrounding the port. This image not only highlights the technical prowess of Leonard de Selva's photography but also transports us back in time to an era filled with curiosity and adventure. It reminds us of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and discovery during an age when uncharted territories beckoned explorers like Dumont d'Urville. As we admire this historical masterpiece, let it serve as a reminder that our thirst for exploration knows no bounds; just like The Astrolabe and The Zelee sailed across vast oceans to unravel new mysteries, may we too embark on our own journeys seeking enlightenment and understanding.
