Created in 1562 by Theodore de Bry, this colour engraving vividly depicts an intense scene during the early days of colonisation. The image showcases a group of shipwreck survivors desperately trying to defend themselves against a fierce attack by Native American Indians. The warriors are depicted wearing intricate feather headdresses and armed with bows and arrows, showcasing their strength and resilience. The composition is filled with action and tension as the survivors struggle to disembark from their capsized boat while simultaneously fending off their attackers. In the background, we can see a bastion or fortification that serves as both protection for the natives and an obstacle for those seeking refuge on land.
