Lord Howe and the Comte d'Estaing off Rhode Island, 9th August 1778
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This oil on canvas print by Robert Wilkins takes us back to a crucial moment in history during the American Revolution. The scene depicts a dramatic sea battle between two formidable fleets off the coast of Rhode Island. On one side, we see the French fleet commanded by the Comte d'Estaing, their flags proudly waving in the wind. On the other side, Admiral Richard Howe leads his British fleet with determination. The artist skillfully captures the chaos and intensity of naval warfare as smoke billows from cannons firing and explosions rock both sides. Sailing ships maneuver through rough waters, showcasing their impressive size and power. The fiery glow illuminates Aquidneck Island and Newport in the background, reminding us of how close this conflict was to land. Wilkins' attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke; he masterfully portrays each ship's unique features while conveying a sense of movement on canvas. This painting serves as a testament to both artists' technical prowess and their ability to capture historical events with artistic flair. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are transported back in time to witness this pivotal moment where empires clashed at sea for control over America's destiny.
