EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Goto Predestinatsia, 1700" a stunning colour lithograph created by Pieter Bergman. The artwork is housed in the State Central Navy Museum in St. Petersburg and offers a glimpse into the rich history of naval forces during that era. Bergman, a Swedish-born officer of the Imperial Russian Navy from 1698 to 1706, was not only an accomplished sailor but also a talented cartographer. His attention to detail is evident in this piece as he masterfully depicts various elements associated with maritime life. The image portrays an impressive display of flags, banners, and ships against a picturesque seascape backdrop. These symbols represent the might and power of imperial naval forces at that time. The vibrant colours used in the lithograph further enhance its visual appeal, making it truly mesmerizing. As we admire this historic artwork, we are transported back to an era when armies and troops relied on their navy for protection and conquests across vast oceans. It serves as a reminder of how crucial naval strength was for nations seeking dominance during this period. This print captures not just the essence of Goto Predestinatsia itself but also pays homage to Bergman's exceptional talent as both an artist and military officer. Its presence reminds us of our shared past while celebrating the beauty found within historical art forms like lithography.
