EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a historic moment as Victor Emmanuel II, the King of Italy from 1861 to 1878, addresses the people of Vicenza from the grand balcony of Palazzo Chiericati. Painted by Orsola Faccioli Licata in the 19th century, this oil on canvas artwork beautifully captures the essence of Italian unity and national pride during the Risorgimento period. As we gaze at this scene frozen in time, we are drawn to the immense crowd gathered below. The sea of faces reflects anticipation and excitement as they eagerly await their beloved king's words. The air is filled with an electric energy that can almost be felt through this remarkable print. The vibrant Italian flag proudly waves above them all, symbolizing hope and freedom for a united nation. It serves as a powerful reminder of Italy's journey towards independence and unification under Victor Emmanuel II's reign. Licata skillfully portrays not only the historical significance but also conveys the emotions present on that memorable day. Through her brushstrokes, she captures both Victor Emmanuel II's regal stature and his genuine connection with his people. This extraordinary image now resides in Museo del Risorgimento e della Resistenza in Vicenza, Italy - a testament to its enduring impact on Italian history.
