EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Battle at Bunkers Hill" takes us back to June 17th, 1775, in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. This vivid colour lithograph by Currier and Ives showcases a pivotal moment in American history when Major General William Howe emerged victorious over the brave American forces led by General Israel Putnam. The scene depicted is filled with intensity and action as soldiers engage in fierce combat on Breeds Hill. The flag of the British Empire proudly waves amidst the chaos, symbolizing their determination to maintain control over the colonies. Wounded soldiers lie scattered across the battlefield, a testament to the high price paid for freedom. What sets this print apart is its attention to detail - penned sketches in the margins identify major figures involved in this historic clash. It serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an educational tool that transports viewers back to a crucial turning point in America's fight for independence. Now housed at Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT, USA, this remarkable piece captures not only a significant battle but also encapsulates the spirit of resilience and sacrifice that defined early American patriots. As we gaze upon it today, we are reminded of our nation's rich history and those who fought valiantly for our freedoms.
