EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "St. John of the Cross, 1701" transports us to the spiritual realm of 18th century Spain. The image showcases St. John of the Cross, also known as Juan de la Cruz or Jean de la Croix, a revered Carmelite monk and mystic. In this intricate artwork, we see St. John seated at his desk in deep contemplation. His eyes are fixed on something beyond our sightline, perhaps seeking divine inspiration for his writings. A dove perched on his shoulder symbolizes the presence of the Holy Spirit guiding him in his spiritual journey. The composition is filled with symbolism: an ear represents St. John's ability to listen attentively to God's voice; a vision unfolds before him as he connects with Christ on a profound level; and birds flutter around him, representing freedom and purity. Created by an anonymous Spanish artist from the 18th century, this engraving captures both the serenity and intensity that defined St. John's life and teachings. It invites viewers to reflect upon their own connection with spirituality and seek inspiration from within. Now preserved in a private collection but made accessible through Fine Art Finder's print edition by Bridgeman Images, this remarkable piece serves as a reminder of St. John of the Cross' enduring influence on Christian mysticism and continues to inspire seekers of truth across generations.
