EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning stained glass portrait of Charles II, dating back to 1873. Created by an English School artist from the 19th century, this masterpiece can be found in the Parliament Buildings of Bridgetown, Barbados. Charles II, known as the King of England during the 17th century, is depicted here with regal elegance and power. The stained glass window features intricate details such as his sword, heraldry symbols, and coats of arms representing his royal lineage. This neo-gothic artwork beautifully captures the essence of both British and West Indian history. The Victorian Gothic style adds a touch of grandeur to this half-length portrait. The pointed arches and gothic revival elements create a visually striking composition that pays homage to both colonial influences and local heritage. As we gaze upon this image captured by Lucinda Lambton's lens, we are transported back in time to an era when monarchs ruled over vast empires. Charles II's presence emanates strength and authority through every crease on his face. This print not only serves as a reminder of our shared past but also celebrates art movements like Gothic Revival that continue to inspire us today. It is a testament to the rich cultural tapestry woven throughout Barbadian history within the Commonwealth realm.
