EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Holy Family with Elizabeth and the infant Saint John the Baptist" a remarkable engraving created by Jan Witdoek in the mid-17th century. Inspired by Peter Paul Rubens, this Flemish masterpiece depicts a tender scene of profound religious significance. At the center of the composition, we witness the Virgin Mary nurturing her divine child, Jesus Christ. With serene grace, she lovingly nurses him while surrounded by an aura of maternal warmth. The intimate bond between mother and son is palpable as they embody purity and devotion. To their right stands Elizabeth, cousin to Mary and mother of Saint John the Baptist. She gazes upon Jesus with reverence, recognizing his sacred purpose even at such a young age. Meanwhile, little John kneels before Jesus in adoration, symbolizing his future role as Christ's precursor. Intriguingly, a lamb rests peacefully beside Mary—a powerful biblical reference to Jesus as both shepherd and sacrificial lamb for humanity's salvation. This inclusion further emphasizes the spiritual depth within this artwork. Witdoek skillfully captures Baroque aesthetics through intricate details like flowing drapery and delicate facial expressions that convey deep emotion. Through this enchanting print from Fine Art Finder brought to us by Bridgeman Images, viewers are transported back in time to witness an iconic moment in Christian history—the holy union between these revered figures who shaped our faith forevermore.
