EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Kunana, an Eskimo" takes us on a visual journey to the icy landscapes of the Arctic. Engraved by John Brandard and printed by Graf and Sorel using lithography techniques, this artwork showcases the remarkable talent of these skilled artists. The central focus of the image is Kunana, an Eskimo hunter who stands proudly in his traditional fur clothing amidst a backdrop of snow-covered terrain. His weathered face tells tales of resilience and survival in this harsh environment. Clutched firmly in his hand is a hunting knife, symbolizing both his resourcefulness as well as his connection with nature. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this composition. The intricate engravings bring out the texture of Kunana's furs while also capturing the glistening ice formations surrounding him. This print not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and way of life that exists within these remote regions. As we gaze upon this powerful depiction, we are reminded of the indomitable spirit that resides within those who call these frigid lands home. It invites us to contemplate their deep connection with nature and their ability to adapt and thrive despite extreme conditions. This rare piece from a private collection offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both its artistic merit and historical significance.
