The Masked Ball - A Glimpse into 18th Century Extravagance
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph print takes us back to the grandeur of a masked ball held on the 23rd of January, 1782. The engraving, created by Jean Michel Moreau the Younger, captures a momentous occasion in French history - the celebration of Dauphin Louis' birth. The scene is set within the opulent walls of Hotel de Ville in Paris, where society's elite have gathered to honor their future king and queen. The room is adorned with an exquisite chandelier that casts a soft glow upon the crowd below. As we delve deeper into this snapshot from another era, we are greeted by an array of extravagant costumes worn by both men and women. Pierrot and Harlequin mingle with Punchinello and Polichinelle from Italian comedy fame, adding a touch of whimsy to this elegant affair. Amidst the sea of masks and elaborate attire, one cannot help but notice King Louis XVI himself alongside his beloved Queen Marie Antoinette. Their presence adds an air of regality to this festive gathering. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness firsthand the vibrant energy that filled these lavish events. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, people reveled in celebrations just as we do today – embracing fantasy through costume while indulging in music and dance. This remarkable piece invites us to immerse ourselves in history
