EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite terracotta sculpture titled "Mater Dolorosa" created by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1869-70. The artwork, measuring 71.1x52.7x34.8 cm, is housed at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes, France. The image captures a poignant moment of profound grief and sorrow as the Virgin Mary mourns over her deceased son, Jesus Christ. Carpeaux's masterful craftsmanship brings to life the raw emotions and intense pain experienced by Mary during this tragic event. The artist skillfully portrays Mary with a delicate veil draped over her head, emphasizing her role as a grieving mother figure known as "Mater Dolorosa" or Sorrowful Mother. Her face reflects deep anguish and despair while she tenderly cradles Christ's lifeless body in her arms. Carpeaux's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this terracotta masterpiece; from the intricate folds of Mary's garments to the subtle expressions on their faces, he captures both physical and emotional realism flawlessly.
