EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from 1871 showcases the fascinating encounter between man and ostrich in Senegal. The image, skillfully created by Rouyer, captures the essence of black Africa's fauna and provides a glimpse into the rich wildlife of this region. Intriguingly, the print depicts both Senegalese and Adrar ostriches, highlighting their distinct characteristics. Amidst this diverse avian display, a daring individual can be seen riding atop one of these magnificent creatures. This brave act exemplifies the harmonious relationship that can exist between humans and animals. The drawing was originally featured in "Le Tour du Monde" magazine, where Rouyer meticulously recreated his observations from nature. It serves as a testament to his dedication to capturing the beauty and diversity of African wildlife. The engraving not only celebrates the natural wonders found in West Africa but also sheds light on various cultural aspects associated with Algeria and Sudan. Through its depiction of Arab civilization and references to North Africa's geography, it offers an insightful portrayal of life on this continent during that time period.
