EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Henri Lerambert's preparatory study for the tapestry cartoon "Life of Christ, Incredulity of St. Thomas". The artwork dates back to the late 16th century and was intended for use in the Church Saint-Merri in Paris. In this image, we see a male figure standing before a group of disciples, his body adorned with wounds known as stigmata. This central figure is none other than St. Thomas, who famously doubted Jesus' resurrection until he saw and touched his wounds. His posture conveys both awe and skepticism as he kneels before Jesus, whose halo shines brightly behind him. Lerambert's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his pen on paper. The intricate lines and delicate washes bring life to this Renaissance masterpiece, showcasing the artist's skillful technique. The interior setting adds depth to the composition, creating an atmosphere that enhances the dramatic moment depicted. The squared paper visible in the photograph suggests that this drawing was meticulously planned out for transfer onto a larger canvas or tapestry. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from centuries ago, we are reminded of St. Thomas' doubt transformed into unwavering faith through a profound encounter with Christ himself. Lerambert's work serves as a testament to both artistic excellence and spiritual contemplation within Christian art history.
