The End of the Day, 1868
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by German artist Hans Thoma. This enchanting scene captures the essence of rural life in Germany during the late 19th century. In this idyllic setting, we see a peaceful garden where a grandmother and her grandchild spend their evening together. The grandmother, dressed in traditional German attire with an apron and spectacles, sits on a wooden bench immersed in her book - perhaps reading from the Bible. The child stands barefoot beside her, engrossed in listening to his grandmother's words. A hen and its chicks wander freely around them, adding to the tranquility of the moment. Thoma skillfully portrays both human figures and nature with equal attention to detail. The lush landscape surrounding them showcases his mastery of capturing light and shadow through delicate brushstrokes. This print transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the simplicity and beauty found within everyday moments shared between generations. It serves as a reminder of our connection to nature and how it can bring solace even amidst busy lives. Displayed at Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany, "The End of the Day" continues to captivate viewers with its timeless charm.
