EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, specifically depicting the destruction and dismantlement of the Bastille from 1789 to 1791. Illustrated by Job, pseudonym for Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Breville (1858-1931), this artwork was created for the book "La Cantiniere" by G. Montorgueil around 1900. The image showcases a street scene in Paris during this revolutionary era, with billowing smoke filling the air as buildings crumble under the force of demolition. The artist skillfully portrays both the violence and chaos that characterized this time in history. The illustration not only highlights architectural destruction but also conveys a sense of human struggle and revolt against oppressive forces. Military uniforms can be seen amidst the wreckage, symbolizing both resistance and conflict. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, this engraving transports viewers back to an important moment in European history. It serves as a reminder of how revolutions can reshape societies and challenge established power structures. This particular print is part of Patrice Cartier's collection, showcasing his passion for preserving historical moments through fine art photography.
