Painted in 1713 during the rococo period, this oil on copper artwork measures 21.5 x 33.5 cm and is housed in the prestigious State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Watteau's painting depicts a scene from the French army camp during the 18th century. The vibrant colors bring to life a group of soldiers resting after their arduous journey. A weary soldier leans on his walking stick while his loyal dog rests beside him, symbolizing companionship amidst adversity. Intricate details showcase Watteau's mastery as an artist - from the horse grazing peacefully nearby to the lush countryside backdrop that contrasts with the harsh realities of war.
