EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gerard de Lairesse's masterpiece, "Allegory of the Arts and Patronage or, Emperor Augustus (63-14 BC) Supporting the Arts". Painted between 1660 and 1669, this oil on canvas artwork measures 62.3x48.4 cm and is currently housed in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Caen, France. The painting depicts a powerful allegorical scene where Emperor Augustus himself stands as a patron of the arts. With an angelic figure by his side holding a palette and paintbrushes, Augustus symbolizes his support for artistic endeavors during his reign. The presence of a globe suggests his influence reaching far beyond Rome. Intricate details such as the busts and sculptures scattered around further emphasize the classical nature of this piece. It exudes elegance and sophistication while highlighting Octavian's role as both protector and promoter of art. Lairesse masterfully captures not only the physical beauty but also the essence of patronage in ancient Rome through this composition. The artist skillfully portrays how art flourished under Augustus' rule with his unwavering aid. This print serves as a reminder that throughout history, great leaders have recognized the importance of supporting creativity and culture within their societies. It invites us to appreciate not only Emperor Augustus' contribution but also celebrates all patrons who continue to foster artistic expression today.
