EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, titled "A Woman Called Anne, the Artist's Wife" we are transported back to the late 18th century. Painted by George Morland between 1790 and 1800, this oil on canvas print captures a moment of quiet introspection. The subject of the painting is Anne, the wife of the artist himself. Standing in full length, she exudes an air of elegance and grace that was characteristic of Georgian women. The composition is set within an interior space adorned with rich drapery curtains, adding a touch of opulence to the scene. Anne is depicted engrossed in reading a letter or correspondence, her attention fully captured by its contents. This detail adds depth to her character and invites us to wonder about the nature of what she holds in her hands - perhaps news from a loved one or words that stir emotions within her. Morland's skillful brushwork brings out every intricate detail in his wife's attire and features. From her fashionable gown to delicate facial expressions, he captures both physical beauty and inner contemplation. This exquisite artwork now resides at Yale Center for British Art as part of Paul Mellon Collection. As we admire this piece today, it serves as a testament not only to Morland's artistic talent but also as a glimpse into domestic life during this period in English history.
