The New Icarus - A Daring Flight to the Skies
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this coloured engraving from the 19th century, we are transported into a world of adventure and imagination. The print, titled "The New Icarus" depicts a man soaring through the air with majestic wings attached to his back. With rooftops stretching below him, he defies gravity and embarks on an extraordinary flight. This artwork is reminiscent of the ancient Greek mythological figure, Icarus, who famously flew too close to the sun and fell from the sky. However, in this modern interpretation by French School artists, we witness a new chapter in Icarus' story - one filled with hope and triumph rather than tragedy. The vibrant colours bring life to every detail of this comic strip-like composition. It sparks curiosity about what lies beyond our earthly boundaries and inspires us to dream big. The man's determination is palpable as he fearlessly navigates through clouds and reaches for endless possibilities. "The New Icarus" serves as a reminder that human beings have always yearned for freedom and exploration. It encapsulates our innate desire to push boundaries and discover uncharted territories. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from Bridgeman Images' private collection, let it ignite our own aspirations for greatness. Let it remind us that even when faced with challenges or setbacks, there is always room for growth and transformation – just like Icarus himself experienced centuries ago.
