The Election III The Polling, 1754-55
EDITORS COMMENTS
by William Hogarth is a captivating oil on canvas print that offers a satirical glimpse into the chaotic world of politics in 18th century England. In this particular scene, Hogarth masterfully captures the frenzy and corruption surrounding an election. The painting depicts rival electoral processions crowding a bridge, symbolizing the divided nature of English politics at the time. A broken-down coach representing Britain suggests that political leaders have let down the country, as even Britannia herself is ignored by the coachmen. An old soldier attempts to tender an oath but is challenged due to his disability, highlighting issues of intimidation and exclusion within the electorate. Hogarth's attention to detail is evident as he portrays rowdy crowds, bribery attempts, and politicians engaged in cheating during card games. The painting serves as both a humorous caricature and a scathing critique of English politics during this era. Through his use of satire and wit, Hogarth exposes the corrupt practices prevalent in elections while also shedding light on broader societal issues such as disability rights and gender inequality. "The Election III The Polling" stands as a testament to Hogarth's ability to capture complex themes through vivid imagery. This print from Fine Art Finder allows viewers to delve into this iconic piece of art history and appreciate its timeless relevance in understanding political dynamics then and now.
