EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of Bulgarian postage stamps from 1897. Created using the technique of colour lithography, these stamps were produced by the European School in the 19th century. The image is part of a series of illustrations commissioned by Liebig as advertising trade cards for their popular meat extract. The stamps themselves depict various scenes that represent Bulgarian culture and tradition. One stamp features a female figure dressed in traditional attire, elegantly ploughing a field with oxen. This promotional artwork not only highlights the beauty and richness of Bulgarian heritage but also serves as an advertisement for Liebig's meat extract. During this period, Liebig's product became widely consumed across Europe and even played a significant role during World War II when it was extensively used as food supply. This vintage card captures the essence of European marketing strategies at that time, combining artistry with commerce to promote both cultural identity and consumer goods. Preserved in private collections today, these postage stamps serve as precious relics from Bulgaria's past. Through this print by Bridgeman Images, we are transported back to an era where advertising merged seamlessly with artistic expression, creating lasting impressions on both collectors and consumers alike.
