EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Real and Ideal (chromolitho)" by the English School in the 19th century showcases a fascinating contrast between reality and imagination. The image, part of a private collection, was originally featured as an illustration for Pen and Pencil magazine. In this artwork, we see a bulldog standing proudly next to a collection of plush toy animals. The juxtaposition between the sturdy, real-life bulldog and the soft, idealized toys creates an intriguing visual dialogue. It invites viewers to ponder upon the distinction between what is tangible and what exists only in our minds. The walking stick held by the bulldog adds another layer of symbolism to this composition. It represents authority or power while also serving as a playful prop for games. This amalgamation of elements suggests that even within our own fantasies or make-believe worlds, there are still traces of reality that shape our perceptions. Through this thought-provoking piece, Bridgeman Images captures not only the physical contrast between real and ideal but also explores deeper themes such as perception, imagination, and playfulness. As we gaze at this image, we are reminded that sometimes it is through these contrasts that we can truly appreciate both sides – embracing both reality's solidity and ideals' limitless possibilities.
