Miss Mary Smith of South Carolina - A Heroic Journey to Heal

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photograph, we are transported back in time to the heart-wrenching days of World War II. The image captures Miss Mary Smith, a courageous US Army nurse from South Carolina, as she tends to wounded soldiers during a flight to North Africa. Taken between 1943-45 by an anonymous American photographer, this powerful snapshot is part of a collection compiled by the Commando Association. Amidst the chaos and turbulence of war, Miss Smith's unwavering dedication shines through as she takes temperatures and provides care for her patients on stretchers within the aircraft cabin. This poignant scene showcases her tireless efforts in evacuating injured servicemen from Italy and ensuring their recovery. As we observe closely, we witness soldiers sleeping soundly under Miss Smith's watchful eye.
